It has so much colour that the skins can be used to “make an excellent ink to cover wines lacking colour”, as one would describe the current role of Sousão in the Douro. Further north, the same variety with the virile name of Vinhão is drunk raw, extreme, rough and proud as a bastion of the last signs of rurality.
